Number ten in Benge’s FORMS Series - Yamaha DX7

Using software on an Apple Macintosh computer I was able to control the performance of a Yamaha TX816 digital modular synthesiser

The software was actually a combination of algorithmic midi note generators (using the LISP programming language) and MOTU Performer MIDI sequencer. Together they provided a way of generating note and timing events, using stochastic methods to initiate the note sequences, and then a process of pitch and timing quantisation carried out within Performer

I used up to eight midi channels to trigger the various modules on the Yamaha TX816, which is a rack unit containing eight TS1 modules, each one containing a DX7 six-operator FM synthesiser

Each TS1 is capable of generating 16 note polyphony, thus the TX816 can generate a total of 128 notes and 8 multitambral sounds at any one time. I utilised the Yamaha DX7 keyboard synthesiser to program the FM voices on the TX816. No other sounds or effects were used
